Description

Writing in Real Life - Session One: Tamarin Norwood

Hosted by The Chichester Centre for Creative and Critical Writing in partnership with The Indigo Press at The University of Chichester.

2 pm – 3.30 (Mitre Theatre)
Session One: Dr Tamarin Norwood, author of The Song of the Whole Wide World, will run a workshop on writing about birth, loss and bereavement. How do we find the words to share and explore such complex emotions? How does ‘Life Writing’ allow space to provide guidelines for individuals to navigate birth, birthing or death in scholarship or life? Tamarin will give a short reading and share writing exercises to explore these ideas. Open to both beginner and experienced writers.
Introduced by Dr Suzy Joinson

Writing in Real Life - Session Two: Suzanne Joinson

A symposium celebrating writing that engages with real life, real people and the ups and downs of creating stories about the self.

Hosted by The Chichester Centre for Creative and Critical Writing in partnership with The Indigo Press at The University of Chichester.

4 pm – 4.50 pm (Mitre Theatre)
Session Two: Dr Suzanne Joinson, author of The Museum of Lost and Fragile Things, will be in conversation with her editor, Susie Nicklin from The Indigo Press. What does it mean to write about families and people who might be impacted by your story? Whose story is it to tell? What are the ethics around writing and publishing narratives about real, living people? Suzy will talk about her experience writing the memoir and Susie will talk about the commissioning, editing and publishing experience of working with autobiographical materials. A good chance to ask questions about getting published and finding a way to put your story into the world.
Chaired by Dr Charles Green

Writing in Real Life - Session Three: Ennatu Domingo

Hosted by The Chichester Centre for Creative and Critical Writing in partnership with The Indigo Press at The University of Chichester.

5 pm – 5.50 pm (Mitre Theatre)
Session Three: Ennatu Domingo, author of Burnt Eucalyptus Wood and an MP in the Parliament of Catalonia, will be in conversation with Dr Daria Mattingly discussing Ennatu’s life writing and life story. Ennatu was adopted from Ethiopia at the age of seven and transplanted to Barcelona where she learned to flourish. She has lived in Kenya, Belgium and the UK, and has travelled across five continents, but keeps returning to the country of her childhood, to re-construct a lost identity guided by the echo of her first language Amharic and the weight of a rich cultural heritage. Torn between forgetting and remembering, Ennatu explores the dilemma of international adoptees and migrant children and their quest for belonging in a book destined to be a classic of its genre.
